The outdoor academic procession has its antecedents in the medieval European university. The procession is designed so that each graduate passes before each faculty member one final time before the conferring of the degrees.

The modern academic gown evokes the medieval cappa clausa, a closed cloak typically worn by clerics; the modern hood, worn over the shoulders and down the back, recalls a functioning medieval head garment.

In the late 19th century, the Intercollegiate Code was established for American universities through which academic dress was standardized to convey the degree held, the field of study, and the university awarding the degree. Accordingly, there are three shapes of gown: the bachelor’s gown is characterized by full, pointed sleeves; the master’s gown is characterized by oblong sleeves, cut away in front to leave a streamer of the sleeve behind; the doctor’s gown is faced with velvet, a likely echo of the clerical tippet, and features bell sleeves adorned with velvet bars.

Academic hoods vary in size, shape, and color; they are lined with silk in the official color or colors of the institution that granted the faculty member’s highest degree. The trim color of the velvet binding indicates the discipline of the degree, commonly including: Philosophy, dark blue; Music, pink; Arts, Letters, and Humanities, white; Education, light blue; Law, purple; Medicine, green; Library Science, lemon yellow: Science, golden yellow; and Divinity, scarlet.

The gown is a symbol of the democracy of scholarship since it covers any clothing indicating rank or status. The cap has its own traditions. The first right of a freed Roman slave was the privilege of wearing a cap, so the academic cap is the sign of the freedom of scholarship. Mortarboards have long been worn but in recent years soft caps or tams and other colorful headgear have gained favor.

An increasingly large number of universities in America have developed unique academic gowns; most of these conform to the basic style of the Intercollegiate Code, although they replace traditional black with school colors, and are often ornamented with embroidered university seals or emblems. European academic dress adds further diversity and color to the academic procession.

This commencement we honor one member of our faculty and one member of our staff who are retiring. Mary Jane Johnson and James Millette together have devoted 55 years of service to Oberlin, and we will miss them. It is an honor and a pleasure to thank each of them for the invaluable contributions they have made to the academic community.

MARY JANE JOHNSON, CURATOR OF THE JAMES AND SUSAN NEUMANN COLLECTION AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS OF THE CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC

Mary Jane (Molly) Johnson is retiring after having worked at Oberlin College since 1971. She taught Javanese gamelan as a part-time conservatory faculty member for 13 years, worked as a full-time conservatory library scores cataloger for 12 years, and was assistant to President Nancy S. Dye for 11 years. In August 2007 she accepted the position of curator of the conservatory’s James and Susan Neumann Jazz Collection and special collections.

JAMES MILLETTE, PROFESSOR OF AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES

James Millette is retiring after 19 years as a member of Oberlin’s African American studies department. He has taught Caribbean, African, and African American history focusing on comparative slavery, colonialism, imperialism, labor history and the societies and politics of modern Caribbean states. He has written numerous articles and papers, two books—The Genesis of Crown Colony Government: Trinidad, 1783 -1815 and Freedom Road—and two chapters in UNESCO's multivolume History of the Caribbean.

LEANNE WAGNER, BA ‘76

Leanne Wagner retired at the end of 2009 from her first career in the pharmaceutical industry,

including stints with Sandoz (now Novartis), SmithKline Beecham (now GlaxoSmithKline), and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now Pfizer). In more than 25 years in the industry she worked in several locations in the US and UK and in multiple functional areas, from new product development to manufacturing to strategy formulation, on both the prescription and over-the-counter sides of the business. Wagner is currently consulting on scenario and strategic planning, and pharmaceutical industry issues.

Wagner has lectured on business strategy in the business schools at Cornell University, Rutgers, and University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, as well as applying these skills in support of strategic planning efforts in the not-for-profit sector.

Wagner earned her AB with honors in biology from Oberlin College and continued her education with

a Master of Science in Genetics from Cornell University and an MBA from Columbia University. Since graduating from Oberlin, Wagner has been an active alumni volunteer, including serving as President of

the Oberlin Alumni Association from 2003-2005. In this capacity she represented alumni on the President’s Strategic Planning Task Force. Since completing her term as alumni association president, Wagner continues to be an active volunteer, currently serving on the President's Advisory Council, as President of the Class of 1976, admissions volunteer, career mentor, and Philadelphia Oberlin Club volunteer. She shares her alma mater with her daughter, a member of the Class of 2008.

Beyond her service to Oberlin, Wagner has served as a congregational leader at three churches and at

the Presbytery level, most recently serving on Session and Chairing the Personnel Committee at Wayne Presbyterian Church as well as serving as a facilitator for the Career Networking ministry. She is a founding board member for the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA) and recently completed a term on the Global Board of HBA. In June 2009, she was elected to a three-year term on the board of Maternity Care Coalition, a not-for-profit organization in Philadelphia. She is a member of Sigma Xi, the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Medicine, AAAS, the Greater Philadelphia Senior Executive Group, and the Forum of Executive Women.

CAROL LONGSWORTH

Carol Longsworth has devoted her life to spreading both music and a spirit of civic engagement within Oberlin and throughout Lorain County. After graduating from Duke University in 1958 alongside her husband, Oberlin Emeritus Professor of English Robert Longsworth, she attended Harvard Divinity School

as a Rockefeller fellow. In 1964, she earned a Master of Music degree from New England Conservatory with a concentration in church music.

Longsworth came to Oberlin in 1964 when her husband was appointed to the English department faculty, and immediately set about forming an ecumenical choir that sang in six different Oberlin churches. She became

a charter member of the Oberlin Community Chamber Singers in 1966 and was appointed its director a year later. In her 37-year term as director, she collaborated with other choirs and instrumental ensembles, bringing diverse elements of the community together. Also during this period, she organized a two-day countywide workshop for Oberlin Community Chamber Singers, Brazeal Dennard Singers, and area high schools that focused on music by black composers.

In 1977, Longsworth was appointed Director of Music at The First Church in Oberlin. During her tenure of 28 years, she led the First Church Choir and supervised other music there, directed many ecumenical choirs for diverse religious services in the town of Oberlin, and conducted First Church reunion choirs during Oberlin College and Conservatory commencements.

In the 1980s, Longsworth conducted research on women composers of choral music, published in Choral Review in 1984: served as Director of Choral Music and Visiting Lecturer in Music History at the College of William and Mary; was a volunteer chaplain at Allen Memorial Hospital; and became a member of an informal task force that helped to append the title of “Affiliate Scholar” to qualifying applicants in the Oberlin area who, though not teaching at the college or conservatory, would benefit from privileges of research scholar designation.

In more recent years, Longsworth served as Coordinator of Environmental Studies Program at Oberlin College, Secretary of the Ohio Choral Director's Association, and a Shansi Fellow in Madurai, India. In 2006 she became a board member of Family Promise of Lorain County, an organization that provides food, shelter and help toward independence to homeless families through work with professional staff, cooperating churches and volunteers. Also in 2006, she took up the position as chair of Family Promise Benefit Concert Committee, which has raised funds annually for Family Promise and its efforts with homeless adults and their children. In 2007, she chaired the Oberlin Poverty Symposium Committee. In 2009, she was a member of the College-Community Day Planning Committee that organized tours and events in Oberlin, including the reopening of the Apollo Theater. With her husband, she now co-chairs the Adult Education program held Sunday mornings at the First Church in Oberlin, and regularly volunteers for the Hot Meals program at Christ Episcopal Church.

Longsworth and her husband count among their family one son and two daughters, eight grandchildren, and

an extended family of young people—from Ethiopia, Japan, Germany, and Romania—who they have invited

to live with them over the years.

ANNE KRUEGER, AB ‘53, HONORARY DOCTORATE OF HUMANITIES

Anne Krueger is Professor of International Economics at the School for Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. She is a Senior Fellow of the Stanford Center for International Development (of which she was the founding director) and the Herald L. and Caroline Ritch Emeritus Professor of Sciences and Humanities in the economics department at Stanford University.

Anne Krueger was the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2006. Prior to that, she had taught at Stanford and Duke Universities. From 1982 to 1986, she was Vice President, Economics and Research at the World Bank. She had earlier been Professor of Economics at the University of Minnesota.

Professor Krueger has held visiting professorships at a number of universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Bogazici University (Istanbul), the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), Monash University and the Australian National University, and the Stockholm Institute for International Economics. She holds a BA from Oberlin College and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin.

Professor Krueger is a Distinguished Fellow and past President of the American Economic Association, a Senior Research Fellow of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, and the American Philosophical Society.

She has published extensively on economic development, international trade and finance, and economic policy reform. In addition to her writings on these topics, she has written a number of books and articles on economic growth, international trade, and economic policy in India, South Korea, and Turkey.

REVEREND JAMES M. LAWSON JR., HONORARY DOCTORATE OF HUMANITIES

For more than seven decades, the Reverend James M. Lawson Jr. has been a champion of civil rights and nonviolence. His enormous and long lasting impact on the civil rights movement in the United States stemmed from his early adoption of Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent civil disobedience philosophy—a technique that ultimately became the movement's most compelling and effective political weapon.

In February 1957, while a student at the Oberlin Graduate School of Theology, Lawson met Dr. Martin

Luther King Jr., who was making his first official visit to campus. At King’s urging, Lawson left Oberlin to become southern secretary of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in Nashville, Tennessee. There. he joined other laypeople and clergy to plan, organize, and direct a nonviolent movement to desegregate downtown Nashville. The first undertaking of its kind in the country, King referred to the effort as “the model movement.”

Throughout the civil rights era, Lawson led workshops on nonviolent action and mentored students who later became prominent activists, including John Lewis, Diane Nash, James Bevel, and Marion Barry. In 1958,

he gave the Little Rock Nine their first major workshop in nonviolent resistance. Lawson also helped lead and organize some of the first student sit-ins, which later spread throughout the south. On the eve of his

assassination, King called Lawson, then chair of the strategy committee of the Memphis sanitation strike, the leading nonviolent theorist in the world.”

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Currently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Vanderbilt University, Lawson also has taught at the _Claremont School of Theology; the University of California, Los Angeles: the University of Southern California, and the Divinity School of Harvard University. He served as a pastor of five congregations from 1950 to 1999, and was a Methodist missionary coach in Nagpur, India from 1953 to 1956. Lawson was a founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; director of nonviolent education for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; instigator of the living-wage movement in Los Angeles through Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice; founding member of Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace: chair of the Advisory Council of the American Civil Liberties Union: founder of Black Methodists for Church Renewal; national chair of the Fellowship of Reconciliation; and founder of Los Angeles’ Interfaith Task Force on Hunger and the Memphis Area Project, South. Retired in the early 2000s, Lawson, an unwavering activist, has continued to campaign against violence, demonstrate for equal rights for gays and lesbians, and work to promote community diversity and solidarity.

Lawson earned an undergraduate degree at Baldwin-Wallace College and studied at the Oberlin School of Theology, Vanderbilt University, and Boston University, where he earned a master’s degree. He is married to Dorothy Dolores Wood, and has three adult sons and three grandchildren.

DIANE MEIER, BA ‘73, HONORARY DOCTORATE OF SCIENCE

Dr. Diane E. Meier is Director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC), a national organization devoted to increasing the number and quality of palliative care programs in the United States. Under her leadership the number of palliative care programs in U.S. hospitals has more than tripled in the last five years. She is also Director of the Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute; Professor of Geriatrics and Internal Medicine; and Catherine Gaisman Professor of Medical Ethics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

Dr. Meier is the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Institute on Aging Academic Career Leadership Award, the Open Society Institute Faculty Scholar's Award of the Project on Death in America, the Alexander Richman Commemorative Award for Humanism in Medicine, the Founders Award of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization 2007, AARP’s 50th Anniversary Social Impact Award 2008, Gold Humanism Honor Society National Honoree 2008, Castle Connelly’s Physician of the Year Award 2009, and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. She received a MacArthur Fellowship in September of 2008. She is currently Principal Investigator of an NCI-funded five-year multisite study on the outcomes of hospital palliative care services in cancer patients.

Dr. Meier has published extensively in all major peer-reviewed medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. She edited the first textbook on geriatric palliative care, as well as four editions of Geriatric Medicine, and has contributed to more than 20 books on the subject of geriatrics and palliative care. As one of the leading figures in the field of palliative medicine, Dr. Meier has appeared numerous times on television and in print, including ABC World News Tonight, Open Mind with Richard Hefner, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, the New York Daily News, Newsday, the New Yorker, AARP, and Newsweek. She figured prominently in the Bill Moyers series On Our Own Terms: Dying in America, a four-part documentary aired on PBS.

Diane E. Meier earned her BA from Oberlin College and her MD from Northwestern University Medical School. She completed her residency and fellowship training at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. She has been on the faculty of the Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development and Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai since 1983. She lives in New York City with her husband and two children.

PETER MOLNAR, AB ‘65, HONORARY DOCTORATE OF SCIENCE

Peter Molnar is Professor of Geological Sciences and Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 1965, Molnar earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Oberlin, where he also was a member of the lacrosse team, and in 1970 obtained a PhD in 1970 from Columbia University for study of geodynamic processes that sustain plate tectonics. After postdoctoral work at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, he spent four months in the Soviet Union as a National Academy of Sciences exchange scientist examining Soviet work on earthquake prediction.

After he returned to the United States, Molnar became an Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he began a life-long study of how mountain ranges and high plateaus form and evolve. In the 1980s, he left his teaching position and devoted time to research on mountain ranges, including much spent in remote regions of Asia, South America, and New Zealand.

In recent years, Molnar has investigated the notion that the climate change that occurred roughly three million years ago—which took the earth from a globally warm, equable climate to one with recurring ice ages—has fooled geologists into believing that certain mountain ranges rose recently in geologic time. His work has led to study of climate change on geologic time scales and a return to teaching in a halftime post at the University of Colorado. Molnar’s research is currently focused on the growth of the Tibetan Plateau and its effect on the geologic history of the Indian monsoon, as well as on the emergence of the islands of Indonesia and the closing of gaps between them, how these geologic shifts contributed to climate change three million years ago, and how the shifts have contributed to the waxing and waning of ice sheet over Canada since then.

ROBERT SPANO, BM '83, HONORARY DOCTORATE OF MUSIC

Robert Spano is among the most innovative and imaginative conductors of his generation. Now in his eighth season as Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, he has conducted the major orchestras of North America, including those in Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Montreal, New York, Philadelphia

and San Francisco. Abroad he has led the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica della

Scala (Milan), Czech Philharmonic, Berlin Radio Sinfonie Orchestra, BBC Scottish and BBC Symphony Orchestras, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, and Oslo Philharmonic, among others.

In addition to his Atlanta Symphony Orchestra engagements during the 2009-2010 season, Robert Spano leads such esteemed ensembles as the Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, Seattle, Saint Louis and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, BBC Symphony Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, giving the UK premiere of Jukka Tiensuu’s False Memories. He participates in the Aspen Music Festival and conducts Verdi's Otello at the Cincinnati Opera.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's long and distinguished recording legacy with Telarc continues to flourish with Mr. Spano. Their discography includes music of John Adams, John Corigliano, David Del Tredici, Christopher Theofanidis, Jennifer Higdon and Michael Gandolfi, Sibelius’ Kullervo, Brahms’s Requiem,

a recently released live recording of La Boheme and the Grammy Award-winning recordings of Vaughan Williams's A Sea Symphony and Berlioz’s Requiem. Mr. Spano and the ASO have also recently recorded two discs of the music of Osvaldo Golijov for Deutsche Grammophon: one featuring the composer's Three Songs and Oceana, and the chamber opera Ainadamar, which was awarded two Grammy Awards.

He is on the faculty of the Oberlin | Conservatory of Music, and has received honorary doctorates from Bowling Green State University, the Curtis Institute of Music and Emory University. Robert Spano makes his home in Atlanta.

JULIE TAYMOR, BA ‘74, HONORARY DOCTORATE OF HUMANITIES

ae ee eg ee Theater, film and opera director Julie Taymor’s latest film, Across the Universe, was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy in 2008. Featuring 35 Beatles songs, the film stars Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess with performances by Bono, Joe Cocker, Eddie Izzard and Salma Hayek. Her next film, The Tempest, stars dame Helen Mirren, Djimon Honsou and Russell Brand and will be released in 2010.

Taymor's previous film, Frida (2002), starred Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina and earned a total of six Academy Award nominations, winning two Oscars. She made her feature film directorial debut in 1999 with Titus, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange.

Taymor’s production of The Lion King celebrates 10 years on Broadway this year and has been presented in 11 countries worldwide, most recently in South Africa and France. The show garnered Taymor two Tony Awards: for best direction of a musical (making her the first woman to receive this award), and for her original costume designs, among numerous other awards. She also co-designed the masks and puppets and wrote additional lyrics for The Lion King.

Taymor’s production of Mozart's Die Zauberfléte, is currently being performed as part of the repertoire of The Metropolitan Opera. Originally directed by Taymor at the Maggio Musicale in Florence in 1993 under the baton of Zubin Mehta, the opera was given a new production at The Met in the fall of 2004 with James Levine conducting. An abridged English version of the Met's production of The Magic Flute inaugurated a

new series on PBS television, “Great Performances At the Met,” and was relayed live, in high definition, to movie theaters around the world in 2006.

Also in 2006, Taymor directed an original opera, Grendel, a darkly comic retelling of the Beowulf tale, based on the novel by James Gardner. The opera was composed Elliot Goldenthal and co-commissioned by The Los Angeles Opera and Lincoln Center Festival.

Fool’s Fire, Taymor’s first film, which she both adapted and directed, is based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story, “Hop-Frog.” Produced by American Playhouse, the hour-long film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and aired on PBS in March 1992. The film won the “Best Drama” award at the Tokyo International Electronic Cinema Festival.

In 2000, Taymor directed Carlo Gozzi's The Green Bird on Broadway. It was first produced in 1996 by Theatre For a New Audience at The New Victory Theater and presented at the La Jolla Playhouse.

Taymor’s original visual music-theater work, Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass, presented at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater in 1996, received five Tony nominations including best director. Originally produced by Music Theater Group in 1988, Juan Darien was directed and designed by Taymor, and co- written with Goldenthal. The recipient of two OBIEs and numerous other awards, it was also performed at The Edinburgh International Festival, festivals in France, Jerusalem and Montreal, and had an extended run

in San Francisco.

Taymor’s first opera direction was of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex for the Saito Kinen Orchestra in Japan, under the baton of Seiji Ozawa in 1992. The opera featured Philip Langridge as Oedipus and Jessye Norman

as Jocasta. Her film of the opera premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Jury Award at the Montreal Festival of Films on Art. The film was broadcast internationally in 1993, garnering an Emmy Award and the 1994 International Classical Music Award for best opera production.

In 1995, Taymor directed Wagner's The Flying Dutchman for the Los Angeles Music Center in a co-production with the Houston Grand Opera. She directed Strauss’ Salome for the Kirov Opera in Russia, Germany, and Israel, under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

Taymor's stage production of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus was produced off-Broadway by Theatre For

a New Audience in 1994. Other directing credits include The Tempest (TFANA at the Stratford American Shakespeare Festival), The Taming of the Shrew, The Transposed Heads (based on the novella by Thomas Mann, co-produced by the American Musical Theater Festival and The Lincoln Center), and Liberty's Taken, an original musical co-created with David Suehsdorf and Elliot Goldenthal.

While on a Watson Fellowship in Indonesia from 1975-79, Taymor developed a mask/dance company, Teatr Loh, consisting of Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese, French, German and American actors, musicians, dancers and puppeteers. The company toured throughout Indonesia with two original productions, Way of Snow and Tirai (subsequently performed in the USA).

In 1991 Taymor received a MacArthur “genius” Fellowship. She has also received a Guggenheim Fellowship, two OBIE Awards, the first Annual Dorothy B. Chandler Award in Theater, and the 1990 Brandeis Creative Arts Award. An illustrated book on her career, Julie Taymor: Playing With Fire, was recently expanded and revised by Harry N. Abrams. Her book, The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway, is published by Hyperion. Taymor's adapted screenplay for Titus is published in an illustrated book by Newmarket Press. An illustrated book, Frida: Bringing Frida Kahlo’s Life and Art to Film, is available from Newmarket Press. A major retrospective of 25 years of Taymor’s work opened in the fall of 1999 at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Ohio and toured the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington D.C.) and the Field Museum (Chicago), and was extended due to popular demand in each venue.
